I realize I'm in the minority here by cutting a break for those guys who
modified command sets back in the 40s and 50s when it was given no more
thought that we'd give to re-purposing a PC power supply today. But
miniature toggle switches didn't become popular and available until when
-- the early 70s perhaps? (those colored handles say "Radio Shack" to
me). There was far less justification to do this kind of modification
by that time, even though the receiver would have still been unwanted
and considered "junk". We didn't get access to 17 meters until the
early 80s, and despite the sellers contradictory statements, regardless
whether it tunes from 13.5 to 20 Mc or to 21 Mc, it would have only
been useful on the crowded, SSB-dominated 20 meter band, not on 15
meters in any case.

I agree with Todd, many hams who used military gear did their best to
"civilianize" it, and since no one had much money invested, they didn't
hesitate to drill holes, remove nameplates, etc. - especially since
there were probably "10 more where this one came from"...

73, Bob W9RAN
