Hello Ken,
I suggest you check the plate voltage of the HF oscillator.
The circuit diagram shows a plate dropping resistor in the circuit of
the local oscillator.
The plate voltage in the HF oscillator and BFO is quite low.
The plate dropping resistor is "buried" in the coil box.
The carbon resistors in these sets have a reputation of "going high".
