I also recall reading that the American division of a German company, MAN, made diesel engines for our subs based on the German designs.  There were huge problems with the American MAN engines early in the war and the chief engineer of the US division had a heart attack as a result.  I don't think there was any evidence of sabotage, just manufacturing errors.
