Hi:

A problem comes about because of signal propagation.  The DF pattern of a loop is in a horizontal plane, so when a 
signal comes from above, like when NVIS mode is present, then the null goes away. That's why ships use an Adcock array 
rather than a loop.

The  PRD-1 HF DF receiver did not do too well in Vietnam because of this same problem.
