My hometown of Columbus, Nebraska has created a very nice memorial to 
native son, Andrew Jackson Higgins:

The memorial includes a full-size replica of a 36 foot Higgins Boat as 
it would be deployed  in a beach landing scenario, and samples of sand 
from numerous invasion beaches are mixed with the sand surrounding the 
boat.  More than 20,000 Higgins boats landed more Allied troops during 
the war than all other types of landing craft combined.
