My hometown of Columbus, Nebraska has created a very nice memorial to
native son, Andrew Jackson Higgins:

The memorial includes a full-size replica of a 36 foot Higgins Boat as
it would be deployed in a beach landing scenario, and samples of sand
from numerous invasion beaches are mixed with the sand surrounding the
boat. More than 20,000 Higgins boats landed more Allied troops during
the war than all other types of landing craft combined.
