[ARC5] 10 meter BC-454 - band noise and signals

Apparently, 10 meters is open from here...to the southern US at least. I am hearing many 
CW signals of stations calling CQ TEST on the low end. 

K4WI, for one, is loud and clear here. N5RT too.

Connecting my low end fed wire to this thing through a 22 pfd mica cap, I get lots of band 
noise, which goes away when I disconnect the antenna.

With no antenna, and the BFO turned on, I am measuring a bit less than 2 V P-P of receiver 
noise, and over 12 V P-P with the antenna connected and no signals tuned in. all other 
controls untouched from antenna to no antenna and back.

I have some more work to do, so I guess I'll stop playing for awhile and do that.
