After reinstalling the "butchered" main tuning capacitor, the result is now 
90% or better elimination of ringing and microphonics with the BFO off.

There still remains some with the BFO on. At this point, I suspect a damaged 
or deteriorated BFO can. I'll dismantle and examine it next. I have several 
spares, so I can replace it if necessary.

I had previously ignored any BFO issues that might exist since the ringing 
caused by the other source was so bad that I couldn't tell if the BFO was a 
problem or not. For a while, I thought it wasn't a problem: then I thought it 
might be. Now I know it is.

To sum up the most recent work:

I removed and checked the main tuning capacitor.
