Gents:

Thanks for rthe ideas. I have a 300 watt Weller that I'll use (carefully) to 
attempt to fix the tuning cap.

I have already removed every single ground-screw in the entire receiver, 
cleaned the chassis and the screws and washers, given each just a touch of 
DeOxit, and reassembled.

So far, no joy.

I ***THINK*** I may have stumbled on the defective part: there is a small 
tubular mica capacitor soldered directly across the 12K8 tube socket: if I get 
anywhere in the vicinity of that thing, the receiver takes off like a rocket. I 
suspect it is either broken or completely defective.

In the meantime, doing some maintenance work on the tuning cap certainly 
is not going to hurt anything either.

Sensitivity has not been accurately tested yet. However, with my cheap Eico 
324 signal generator cranked all the way to the bottom, I can still copy its 
signal.

I have dug out the AN/URM-25, since I can't get to my HP-8640B yet, and 
will see what that tells me.
