Today, after receiving substantial help from the folks on the forum, especially Robert Downs
and John Rose, I did two things that solved the problem.
1) I removed (unwound) L-2, the RF amp plate coil, completely, and then checked the
resonant frequencies end-to-end of L-3/C-4 combo with my Millen GDO. It tuned from 32 to
37 MHz.
2) I added about 1.6 turns of wire to L-3, making a total of 6.6 turns for L-3. From the info I
was given by Robert and John, and considering the capacitance I had on C-4, I had
calculated that I needed 7 turns. 7 turns would have been a tad too many.
Result after reassembly: mixer grid now peaks beautifully and tracks properly. I have a very
sharp, narrow peak and yet have ample adjustment left on C-4D.
Tuning covers just under 28 MHz to just over 30 MHz. and the oscillator adjustments have
some "range" left at both the high and low ends.
RF amp "Align Input" peaks at a bit more than 1/2 meshed.
I also improved my power supply and now can hear only a very small amount of hum
whereas before it was quite loud.
Tomorrow I'll measure the true sensitivity and will try to complete the alignment.
I also straightened the case out where it had been badly hammered.
It is starting to look and work like a real receiver.
