If, by "the 512" you refer to the Setchell-Carlson Model 512, the reason you
can't get it working is because it does not operate from a 28 vdc supply...
it need real B+ and 12-vdc!
The Model 512 is known under the JAN nomenclature of R-76/ARR-13. It requires
12 vdc for filaments, and a B+ supply **up to 250 vdc**. It was intended to
be used on military light aircraft with 12 vdc systems that employed the RCA
AVR-20-A1 MF/HF receiver, the AVT-112 MF/HF transmitter, and the AVA-126 vibrator
supply. The R-76/ARR-13 uses that same AVA-126 for its B+ supply. This added
beacon band coverage that the AVR-20-A1 did not provide from a unit that was
smaller and better performing than RCA's AVR-15 beacon band receiver (which
is the same size as the AVR-20-A1, but lacks an RF stage that the R-76 has).
