So, in all this back and forthing about backlash, etc. how come no one has mentioned the word "hysteresis". The delay between action on a system and the reaction of that system. Applies to mechanical systems, such as gears trains, electrical systems, economic, thermal, chemical, and any number of things. Mike, W6MAB

Hi,
I have experienced both kinds of these foilbles in tuning dial works.
The generic backlash in geartrains that I am familiar with is the play
between parts. The irritation from "torque windup" that drives the
mechanism backward a little when we let go is slightly more irritating
than just having to move the dial a little further when backing up onto
a signal. I don't really like either one. My dadios don't do that. One
or two used to. They're *GONE*.
