In other cases, the tail number was two letters and then (usually)  
three digits).  For example in the Navy Helos I flew, AW-401 indicated  
that it belonged to HS-5 (Helicopter Anti Submarine Squadron 5) and  
the tail number was 401.    This formed the tactical call sign of the  
aircraft.

The Bureau of Aeronautics ("BuNo") serial number I presumed was unique  
among all Navy aircraft and was also painted on the aircraft.  In our  
case I find pictures with 4- and 5-digit BuNos.
