Hello Neil,
Interesting comment.  When I was 16 years old the ONLY thing I built
that worked was a regenerative receiver - 1x 6SN7GT.
I built an amplifier using a 6V6, and with 375 volts supply and an OPEN
transformer (no load!) the high voltage would flash over inside the
tube.  
I didn't know about load lines or reflected load.

Anyway, I knew a physics professor and this guy was like god!  
He could calculate the gain of a single transistor circuit in his head! 
WOW!!
He encouraged me a great deal when he told me he was 21 years of age
before his first circuit worked.
This knowledge encouraged me a great deal.
