Thanks Dave - I assume many did similar things and the performance was 
probably good enough at least for the lower bands.  I want to try the 
Stoner approach with one of the 453s I have here, because it can be 
easily done on a plug-in basis without any hacking.   The very clever 
3-tube converter turns the BC-453 into what has to be the worlds 
simplest/cheapest triple-conversion receiver with much improved image 
rejection and the same product detector used in the Collins 75A-4.
