Dave,
One thing missing from your power distribution diagram is the "varistor" across the modulation transformer secondary. I've always assumed that one of its purposes was probably to minimize inductive kick from the transformer, generated when the radio was keyed on CW. There is no provision in the original circuit for bypassing the transformer secondary in CW mode.
Is there something in the way of modern components which can be used to perform the same function?
