Geoffrey,

You're the first person in this thread to use the word "several".  Although 
John's statement is perhaps overly dramatic, it is grammatically correct.  
It is correct to write "1 ton".  It is also correct to write "1.01 tons". 
With anything greater, one should also use the plural.

It has been decades since I last read the GM1&C course book (for fun, 
because I would have been an ET at the time) and I don't recall the actual weight 
range of 16"-50 projectiles (AKA bullets).  But I can recall from 
experience that it doesn't take 16" guns to damage installed equipment.  USS Bushnell 
(AS-19) used to send EM's to the crews berthing space in the foc'sle to 
remove all light bulbs before the required annual gun shoot.  The berthing 
space was located under Mount 51 (two 5"-38 guns) and by about the third round, 
most of the lamps would be broken out of their bases.
