>From my readings I learned the Soviet Union conducted a very large industrial espionage effort under the guise of  the US lend-lease program, largely overlooked and perhaps condoned by the US government. We are talking of hundreds of tons of purloined documents. I suppose nearly anything could have been justified in the early months of the war to keep the Soviet Union in the war fighting the Germans while the USA struggled to ramp up its military effort and industrial war machine.  In terms of casualties and number of personal directly involved in fighting the Germans The majority of the effort of defeating the Germans in WW2 fell on the shoulders of the USSR.  I understand the outcome of the war depended on far more then mere head counts but Americans tend to see the American-British and Canadian efforts as being dominate.

There exists a very interesting book, written sometime just after WWII,
as I recall.  The title of the book was "From Maj. Jordan's Diary" and
detailed that officer's duties related to lend-lease.  My point of
mention is that, in this book, the author outlines the outright theft of
millions of dollars in materials not remotely related to the war effort
by the Soviet Union.  They shipped everything from bathroom fixtures,
pianos, expensive clothing, and furniture off to the USSR by the ton.
Apparently there were those in the Roosevelt cabinet and Congress that
thought that "Uncle Joe" was a fine fellow.   I may try and find a copy
of that book, again.  I think I read it in the late 50's!  Anyway, just
an aside.....
