First of all, the -AJ, -AK, -AL, and (obviously) your -AN all had modulation like 
the LMs. As far as I know, those were the only BC-221s which DID have that 
feature. None of the "earlier" version had it, that is certain.

Secondly, the different suffixs generally denoted the different manufacturers. 
For instance the -AJ,. and -AL were manufactured by Rauland. I don't 
remember which company made the -AK.

Thirdly, possibly your -AN model immediately preceded the later models in 
which the nomenclature was changed to something like TS-173.

I have two -AKs here, BTW. They both work just fine and I use them 
regularly.

Do you know which manufacturer made your -AN?
