     A lot of these photos were made for the Office of War 
Information, the Library of Congress, probably the original 
source, would tell you.  A great many, if not most, were 
posed; one reason was the need for a great deal of light, 
usually supplied by flashbulbs.  Another reason was for 
security reasons especially at war plants; one did not want 
to show too much.  The photos were for publicity purposes to 
improve civilian moral.
     Those interested in railroads will find an enormous 
number of pictures at the LOC site. It takes a little 
practice to navigate the site.
