Interesting Mike but I don't think the yellow markings on the rx and
identical markings on the tuning box refer simply to a resistor.
As the ARC5 series is R-23 to R-28 my guess is its R for receiver, a
modded set, that is now given the R-31 number.
As the tuning box also says "6V AC" then it could be a system designed
for 6V ac rather than a dc supply.

I have a Navy Aircraft Radio Maintenance Note for the ARC-5 that adds
a similar resistor, but of course it doesn't cover a piece of (ugh)
