The Old Man was a radio op and/or ball turret gunner in 17s and 24s. 
In one instance his 17 ran off the end of the runway, on takeoff, and 
it had half the bomb bay filled with a gas tank. It hit a gully, 
knocking the landing gear off and finally came to a stop with all the 
crew making it out. The 17 burned completely leaving only ash, an 
inglorious end to the aluminum.
