Of course all the histories written before about 1976 fail to mention
the codebreaking operation at Bletchley Park, which had an immense effect
on the war.  And related to that, interception of HF signals to get 
material to decrypt.  There were also the German directional beams
used to guide their bombers to England.  Once the beams were switched on
the British pretty well knew what was going to be the target, but that
might have been too late to be helpful.

Speaking of blackouts, I remember being in Little Rock AR when there was
a blackout drill.  Don't know if that was because someone seriously
thought enemy airplanes might get that far into the U.S. interior, or if
it was just an attempt to make the civilian population feel the war was
real.
