The next step up from basement level radios would be the Hallicrafters S-40 
series and S-85 for the same general era.

Nationals NC-57 is a sleeper as is the NC-125 and even the NC-98 is fairly 
decent. For a bit later dont overlook a NC-109.

I dont know what is available down under but keep looking. Heck even a WW2 
BC-312/342/348 is useable to some degree.
