In the 1960s and 1970s, when I was writing the CQ surplus column, I was 
also Washington correspondent for western newspapers and found enough 
fire in all the smoke to write about it. I can't tell you how I was 
abused by some of the corrupt MARS people. One even set a vicious dog on me.
     I talked to DOD people who at  first refused to believe me until I 
pointed out a pallet load of new, clean paperclips being offered as 
surplus by the Government....   And when I suggested to a deputy secdef 
that the Pentagon was wasting maybe $500,million a year his response was 
'in an operation this size that's peanuts." -  great quote in my paper.
