A reference source I have says that the USN procured 230 J3C-65 aircraft (similar to a US Army L-4 or O-59) and used them as trainers. They Navy also bought 20 aircraft similar to the Army's L-4J, and designated them NE-2. Although supposedly trainers ,many NE-1's were used by the USMC for observation duties.
The Navy also bought 100 J5C Cub Cruisers modified with hinged sections fuselage sections behind the wing, for use as air ambulances, designated as HE-1, later redesignated AE-1.
By the way, the book shows how a drogue antenna that unrolled from inside the fuselage atop the tail fin was used by Army L-4's.
