Gee.... I would never use a 1/2 watter in such service.

That is the first thing I would change: try a 10 watter.

Look at the P-P voltage with a scope and figure out the total wattage. I'll bet 
you will find it to be 3 to 5 watts. No wonder your 1/2 watter is getting hot.
