[ARC5] The 6U8 - what's the big deal with this "toob"

I planned on using a QST article that appeared not too long after the war
ended. Wanted to use the converter that the EUROPEANS like, the ECH81. It
has more conversion gain than most of the US ones. Also use a dual triode
similar to 12 AT7 for regen detector/IF/AF amp stage. Never been able to
get a Jones Supwe Gainer to work right with the existing available IF cans.
Plan on using a high BCB IF freq and the hand wound IF transformer in
article on a 3/4" Millen coil form.:

Hi Glen,
We Aussies have a warped sense of humor. When I read your e-mail below
I just HAD to laugh.
I'm in the process of building a set - with the idea of "wringing a lot
of performance from a few tubes".
The basis of the idea is a regen (Jones) superhet, along the ideas of
the Simple-X-Super (etc) from the late 50s or early 60s.

Now, as you know this set uses a triode-pentode - either a 6U8 or a
6EA8. (or maybe 6BL8)
Recently I bought "toobs" from ESRC.
Then I read what you wrote. Ow GAWD! Maybe I bought a short-lived
6U8 and not a long-lived 6EA8!!!
Can't remember which. PANIC, PANIC, PANIC.
Check box of "toobs". It's a 6EA8.

Thank god! I'd hate to have one of those shonky 6U8s in MY super-dooper
get everything from nothing set!!!
As I said, we Aussies have a warped sense of humor.

73 to you
Thanks for replying.
(Just don't frighten me so much next time, ok?)

The life of the 6U8 generally is nowhere near as long as the 6EA8 which
can be used to replace all of the 6U8 tubes in the KWM-2 and S-Line
equipment EXCEPT for the tone oscillator in the 32S- series and KWM-2
series. For some reason, the 6EA8 often causes problems when used as
the tone oscillator. Why? I really don't know. Maybe, some day, when
I finally get the time, I might try and see just why the 6U8 functions
considerably better as the tone oscillator.

Hello List,
I would like to understand the question about 6U8's, in "Collins" mind.
Why is the 6U8 considered to be a "hateful toob".
