I think film is THE way for really long-term preservation. I have copied
records of American auto racing from 1908 to 1984 on to more than 100
reels of film, which can be read today on readers in almost any large
library. The film does not go away, like a computer program I used to
transcribe some records on to in 1985. The program nor a computer that
uses it, no longer exists. Floppies I used five years ago no longer
"read." I have no problem with putting records on a computer, just don't
trust them to last "forever" that way.
