  There has been a tale circulating for years about the Japanese, 
between the wars,  copying British warship plans. According to the tale, 
the Brits got wind of what was going on and doctored a set of 
blueprints. When the copy was launched it capsized, as the prints had 
"inaccurate" stability.....

    BTW, I once had copies of correspondence between the Imperial 
Japanese Navy and Aircraft Radio Corp. in the late 1930s, seeking to buy 
radio equipment. Those letters are now at the National Air & Space Museum.
