A shield is normally connected to a pin inside the connector that
represents ground potential, Jay. It is generally poor practice to rely
on the connector nut to complete an official ground connection. What
you mention on the typical AN/MS connectors is usually done to make sure
the shield includes the connector itself (in addition to being fed
through one of the pins.) That way, any corrosion at the nut's
interface with threads or connector body can't cause the connector body
to become "radiant" from an RF standpoint. In the ARC connectors, the
#2-56 flat head screw that holds the backshell onto the insert threads
directly into the pin that represents circuit ground, so the extra step
isn't needed.
