Robert,

I'm aware that the top has been removed by someone -- exposed xtal slabs is not a good idea.
Thanks for the id info.
I also have a 3 MHz two pronged unit, slightly wider and less thick than the TCS unit:

RMCA
CRYSTAL UNIT
Radiomarine Corp
        of
    America

FREQ.Kc SERIAL
 3000 B54921
MODEL TEMP
  R-1 35 oC

I cud check my periodicals tosee if 3 MHz was used as a maratime fequency or whatever.
I have gotten this unit to oscillate.

I did a freelance mod (oops) on a paratrooper transceiver for Radiomarine, Manhattan
just when I got out of high school, back around 1960 -- think the units were to be used
in South America on the 27-28 MHz spectrum.

  Henry,

Your unit being open at the top means that someone removed the top cover and didn't replace it. They are not normally open like that. And the majority do not have any pressure adjust screw. I may have seen one like that, out of hundreds.

The holder is functionally equivalent to the Signal Corps FT-249. The most common Navy Type Number appears to be NT-40130 (based on how many of each I have). Made by numerous contractors.

That makes a lot of sense - now I know why there are 3 prongs on the TCS
    xtals.
Found the one I mentioned before:

              QUARTZ CRYSTAL
    CRYSTAL FREQ SERIAL NO.
    1727.5 KC RW-14729
        AXIS TYPE oC
            A I - G 25
    EQUIP MODEL OUTPUT FREQ
           TCS 3000 KC
    COLLINS RADIO COMPANY

The "Equip Model" labelling, here stamped "TCS," -- could possibly imply
    that these type
xtals were also used in other gear and there might be some container box for
    them,
    not necessarily specific to the
    TCS.

My xtal is exposed, open at the top -- can see there's an adjustable
    pressure screw.
I will see if I can get it to oscillate.

    (Here, [(1727.5 x 2) - 455(IF)] KC , yielding a 3000 KC receiver
    frequency).
