Are y'all familar with the type of can opener that opens the side of the can rather than the top? By this I mean it cuts below the rim rather than around the top of it. They are vastly superior to the old fashioned kind, among other things producing a rim that is not so sharp that it tends to cut your hand.
I think if you used one of these can openers you could cut along the side of the can below the rim, leaving the rim and lid intact. Then you could restuff the cap and pot it all back together with a suitable compound. The can would be just a wee bit shorter than before and the lid would be intact.
I have a loose Command Set Receiver can cap somewhere as well as badly cut up ATA receiver rear chassis (BC band, alas). I will give this a try and let y'all know. I need to sort through my boxes of junk anyway and see if I still have those 262 kc IF cans I bought as an assortment some decades ago.
