What I've been doing to get inside these little critters is grind off just the outside lip of the cap(mica end)with a Dremel tool. Then unsolder the ground connection between the two threaded holes.Gently pry up the mica and the rest pulls right out. For reinstalling solder in new caps with short leads, you could add a bit JB Weld to inside of the lip. Pull the leads tight and solder the ground wire.
This is not my idea, I read it on a forum. It's easy and doesn't require a metal lathe. The only noticeable difference is no outside lip so you just see the mica all the way out to the front edge.

Some have asked what the Mouser part numbers are for the 0.01 MFD 500

VDC and 0.05 MFD 500 VDC caps I am going to use to re-stuff the can-

caps.

Here are the part numbers I found and used:

0.01 mfd 500 VDC Mouser Part # 140-500Z5-103Z-TB-RZ @ $0.18 each

0.05 mfd 500 VDC Mouser Part # 594-S503Z69Z5UL63L0R @ $0.48 each
