Although I have not yet started on that job, what I intend to do is to try two
different methods, both of which have been described on the ARC-5 list:
1) Cut around the top of the can, just under the lip, with a tubing cutter,
restuff, and then either solder the top back on, or glue with epoxy or JB-
Weld. I suspect that the JB Weld will be the easiest, strongest, and least
noticeable method.
2) Cut the mica insulator very carefully around the inside-top-edge of the lip,
restuff, then glue the mica insulator back in with epoxy or something similar.
If this is done properly, it should be almost unnoticeable.
I have a fairly large stack of bad can-caps, and will be adding to that stack
very shortly.
I use a Heathkit C-3 to check them with, after I have either disconnected or
removed them. It has always been correct, so far.
As soon as I rebuild the SEMCOR RC-115 clone of the Sprague TO-5, I'll
use that.
I still have to find some smaller 0.22 MFD 400 or 500 VDC caps. Haven't
done that yet.
