I've had some success with BFOs for low-frequency IFs using non-tapped
inductors with
a Colpitts oscillator. Most recently I did this using a 12mH RFC. I can't
find the circuit
right now but it's here somewhere. I was able to get 85kHz and a reasonable
swing around
that with 100pF variable (across the RFC).

So it may well be possible to stuff a BFO can with new components to work on
the higher
IF but without any visible change (there will have to be some changes around
the oscillator
tube, unfortunately).
