I haven't checked the geography; NPR said the wreck was 
hundreds of miles away from Howland.  But this story says:
   "The crash site is in direct alignment with Earhart's flight path 
     out of Lae, past north of Buka Island in a straight northeast 
     direction to Howland...."

Guess I should go look at a map....
