Oh, my, oh, my, oh, my. I have learned more about my dusty old beast in one
message than I knew in the several years I've had it here. Much many thanks
for the education, Mike. You, Robert, Mike H and David are large reasons
why I missed this place; I learned a heck of a lot more than I was ever able
to offer.
The time lines you present are even more interesting. I'm not sure where I
saw that 2% figure for the frequency difference/channel on the 18S-4, just
that it wasn't in the manual I keep not being able to budget. The one I
have had a few crystal pairs in it but it was a pretty sparse set and some
were loose inside the radio. My original plan for it was to park it on some
of the AM nets although I don't have a dynamotor for it so power could be an
issue. I may still do so although there are issues to be resolved before I
can even consider it.
As to the 1% spread, it might be educational to check the HF en route
frequencies as well as the company radio frequencies to see if any frequency
pairs jump out as being within those limits across the spectrum. I don't
think I have a list of them for that period - or any period, for that matter
- but I'm sure someone does.
I wonder how much of a problem it would have been to insert a mechanical
filter in a -4 as an upgrade, essentially make it into a -4A as a field
change or even if Collins made kits to do that.
Oh, well ... points not worth pondering ...
