The opto idea is pretty easy to implement. The receiver only needs to be a
BCB with a photodiode and probably a bias supplyy (9 V transistor battery)
and load resistor, instead of the converter.
In fact, if you really wanted to be cute, you could use different color
LEDs and optical BPFs to simulate dfferent frequencies. LoL.
