[ARC5] Happy Birthday Boatanchors

Dave, Don and all, the problem here in Hawaii is just as bad but with a
smaller population pool to work with. On the other hand, my efforts
vis-à-vis the ARC book* may help, even if it just brings one new person into
the fold.

Dave, you mentioned the interest in your setup several months ago. It may
be worth doing again and again to keep it in front of people (although with
a power source ;-) ) to get that same One New Person. Anyone else with
similar rigs willing to take them off the shelf and light them up at
hamfests, flea markets or anywhere else people congregate (unless it's a
congregation, of course) has the same potential of getting One New Person.

Bruce noted the lack of female participation, which is true in many
technical hobbies, and that's an untapped reserve we should be working on.
How is a bit of a sticky issue but something will come to mind. One way
would be to have some of the few ladies we do have write articles, letters
etc to/for some of the women's magazines. Put the concept in front of them
where they can't miss it. Put it up as a challenge if nothing else - quit
tole painting breadboards (You have no idea how many perfectly good wooden
cutting boards I've seen ruined that way!) which have absolutely no real use
or "historic significance" and do something that can help preserve history.
It's like the lady on one of the miniature machining forums who picked up
metal work as a hobby not that long ago and is now teaching the guys how to
do things. Some of the male participants are machinists by trade too ...
although, admittedly, working in miniature does present problems not found
on larger machines.

* This has proven a sore subject with me. Not doing it - I am working on it
as much as I can and want to see it through - but publication. I don't care
about money. Er, wait. I do but not from book sales. Instead, I want to
get it in front of as many eyes as possible as quickly as possible which
means online and as sections are completed. The question is now how many of
our fine listizens are going to get upset by this arrangement even though it
means getting the information faster and free?

Best regards,
