Back to Ken's original occurrence.

The symptoms sound to me like a component failure. Perhaps the bypass cap
for the
oscillator stage. This could be pulling down the B+ and causing the audio
level to drop,
as well as affecting the alignment of the oscillator.

I have had two 12A6 failures on a BB-946 (used here daily to listen to KNX
1070). In one
case it developed a plate-screen grid short. The other may have been a
filament failure,
I forget.
