I'm pretty sure you're right about CQ taking over Ham Radio magazine -
I bought several years of back issues here of what was advertised
as Ham Radio but the later issues were all CQ and I was told that
was so because of the take over. Ham Radio, IM(not so ;0)HO, was a
better magazine than the later CQ's. Earlier CQ's and QST's were far better
then
the glossy stuff they put out today - there were real meat and potatoes
articles before the 80's/90's and I'm really glad I kept my old issues.
Also think the smaller size format were/are handier to use.
