I made an error in my comment. It was the late B-25s that the radio operator
moved the waist compartment.
I was in a SAC wing in the mid to late 50's. We had KB-29s. The radio
operator was just rear of the pilot
The command sets were not adjusted in flight (other than remote receiver
tuning) so it did not really matter where they were put. The radio operators
use of the liaison set was mostly by CW.
On a bombing mission the radio operator of the lead aircraft would listen
for a recall or target change while on the way to the target. After the
target was bombed the radio operator of the lead aircraft would send the
strike report.
The radio operators of the other aircraft were there incase the lead
aircraft was shot down.
