That's true for the Imperial gallon, but most members on the list are Americans,
and it's more appropriate to convert to the US gallon, viz. about 3.8 L per US gallon.
Incidentally, this is why the US 55 gallon oil barrel was always called a 44 gallon
drum or barrel when I was a kid. Surplus ones were commonly used here for
backyard incinerators to dispose of rubbish. Illegal now of course. The conversion
is roughly 4/5ths, or 0.8. There's a theory in some circles that Amelia Earhart's
plane was mistakenly fuelled using the wrong units prior to her last takeoff, causing
her to run short of fuel.
