The BLS calculator is a sham. It consistently underestimates inflation
because (a) it's "basket" of goods is hopelessly out of date and (b) the
government uses it to calculate COLAs, so underestimating inflation cheats
those receiving benefits and saves the government money to squander
elsewhere.
