As far as the caps go, I tend to agree although this isn't always doable.
Besides, opening things up and restuffing them is fun ... in a rather
disturbed sense of amusement sort of way.

Resistors, though, I'll directly replace if at all possible.  I think it
looks better and, to me, is easier.

Maybe I'm not the perfectionist I should be but I don't mind a few
under-chassis wiring mods if the end result is the same as original.  I am
critical of cosmetics (although not of the finish; I like lived in over
House Beautiful) so extra holes etc are definitely verboten.  One reason I
like black wrinkle is I can do metalwork to repair such damage then hide it
under paint.
