LeRoy's landing gear dates all the way back to the Loening amphibian. We 
Loening sold out he financed LeRoy to start Grumman. The first product LeRoy 
did was the "A" float with the same landing gear.

LeRoy was also responsable for the folding wing design on the F4F.

These are carryovers from the F4F's immediate predecessor, the F3F, which
got at least the landing gear from even earlier aircraft.
