"Respectfully- As I've said many, many times, but it seems
still not enough: HF was not "replaced" by VHF in combat
aircraft, especially not in the Pacific. The two systems continued
to be used concurrently throughout the war and long after,
with extensive documentation that VHF in the Pacific was
far from "ready for prime time." I've written extensively
on this, with documentation and cites, for years,
yet this myth still won't die. Sigh....."
I was not thinking of HF versus VHF but instead of RU, GF and SCR-283 being replaced by ATA, 274-N, ARC-5. And presumably this mainly happened at the factory level as new aircraft were introduced.
I once looked at a UC-78 that had flown into Paul's Valley, OK for restoration. It was still very original, in 1977, complete with SCR-283 equipment. And that was the only radios it had. Which led to the pilot sitting it down on I-35 in the middle of a thunderstorm enroute to the field.
By the way, if anyone wants any close up photos of the chain drive gear mechanism on the FM-1, I have some photos I can provide.
Thanks for all the great info!
