I'll add two further comments, as I don't recall anyone specifically
mentioning these.
There was a line of volume controls from the 50's or so (used in AC-DC
radios, etc.) that had a splined shaft with a longitudinal slot cut in the end
so that it would squeeze down a little. The plastic knobs made to fit these
also fit the Command Set receiver male splines pretty well. And the OD of
the end of the knob with the splined hole was (at least in several cases) a
good fit for the ID of the male AN fitting. They don't look too spiffy and
the colors I seem to recall were brown and maroon or magenta. But they
worked pretty well. Didn't tend to fall off.
And of course there were actual local tuning controls made, with a small
spinner type knob. A.R.C. 6743 and MC-127. Both have a small spinner knob.
The throw of the spinner on the MC-127 is larger than the one on the 6743.
There is also a spinner knob similar to MC-127 made to fit the larger
spline used on everything else in aircraft that had mechanical remote tuning
(MC-237?). It won't fit the Command Set receivers. Finally, there was a local
tuning "key" for tuning the locked-tuning receivers. It stored on the
underside of the tube cover, with the control box tuning dial. But it is not
convenient for general use.
