Not sure when it was closed or what it's official name was but it was quite active in 1967-1969 time frame. While we campers were trout fishing and canoeing from the west branch of the Penobscot to Fort Kent ME, the B-52's skimed overhead at tree top (probably 1000 ft) and as we lay back in our canoes fishing for Lake Trout we watched the formation contrails with interlooping fighter contrails artworking our sky and glad we were whare we were.

hat was the name of the SAC base at Bangor?
It must have closed before I went into SAC in 1963.

Hello Henry,
I believe that Gables was / is a manufacturer of comercial airline
vionics.Your data plate indicates Eastern Airlines, a now non-existant airline.
hen I was a teenager I flew the Eastern "shuttle" between Newark, N.J. and
oston, Mass. probably 50 times or more. They flew Lockheed "Electras" back then.
ame airframe as PV-3's (correct me if I'm wrong, guys!).
As an aside,I spent several wonderful summers on the Allagash waterway in
aine.To get to Maine, I flew from Newark,N.J. to Bangor International on olde,
ust this side of scrap, Connie's.( I think Eastern Airlines too) I watched with
ascnation as the rivits danced on the wings as we literally skimmed the
reetops going in to Bangor. Those engines made every note in the orchestra and
ou could hear Rossini or Beathoven or any composer you wished just by imagining
he score. You wonder why Bangor ME is an international airport? It is a retired
AC base and has long runways. Back then, the international terminal was a large
hack, mil style. It was also the domestic terminal. If I could live those
outhful days all over again, I would in a heartbeat!
