The time it takes me to prepare something for shipping
including paying for shipping and printing/affixing the label
varies from about 5 minutes (fits a Flat Rate box and I can
find suitable packing materials) to half an hour or more
(I need to double box, find boxes that will nest reasonably,
and strengtheners to protect knobs, etc).
I usually add a few bucks to cover the cost of packaging
in the second case.
If something requires a trip to the PO this is a major pain,
since I have to drive there, wait in line, politely decline
Global Intergalactic rate, etc. I have stopped doing this
unless the XYL asks :).
I never bid on an item until I have checked that the shipping
is something I'm willing to pay. Of course, I have had to learn
this lesson via small amounts of repeated pain. But I would
think that the normal mechanisms of buying and selling would
tend to reduce the success rate of sellers with non-competitive
rates.
